Popular Nigerian Kano-based TikTok influencer Murja Ibrahim Kunya has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly abusing and mutilating the naira.
Kunya was reportedly apprehended at Tahir Guest Palace in Kano, where she allegedly sprayed naira notes for fun during her hotel stay.
Her arrest follows an intense manhunt after she jumped administrative bail granted to her by the EFCC over a month ago.
The social media personality was initially arrested in January 2025 for violating the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which prohibits the abuse and defacement of the naira.
She was released on bail pending her arraignment before the Federal High Court in Kano but failed to appear in court, prompting the EFCC to launch a search for her.
Following weeks of investigation and surveillance, EFCC operatives successfully re-arrested Kunya on Sunday, March 16, 2025.
She has since been taken into custody at the Commission’s Kano Zonal Directorate, where she awaits her court appearance.
The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to upholding the integrity of the Nigerian currency and warned against acts of abuse, including spraying stamping, and mutilation of the naira at social gatherings.
