Madam Cecilia Atootalega, the mother of Ghanaian hiplife artist Okumfour Kwadee, has opened up about her son’s ongoing struggles with mental health, saying bad company and substance use were a major cause of his problems.

Speaking in an interview on United Showbiz, the veteran musician’s mother revealed that her son’s condition resulted from certain poor life choices. She explained that Okumfour Kwadee fell into bad company, leading him down a destructive path involving substance use.

Expressing her disappointment, she stated: “My son’s situation is the result of obstinacy, bad company, and substance use. I won’t sit here and disgrace my own son, but I believe he is the cause of his own problems.”

Madam Cecilia also addressed media claims suggesting she was responsible for Okumfour Kwadee’s predicament by preventing his industry friends from helping him.

Dismissing these allegations, she clarified that she has been actively praying and seeking assistance for her son.

She disclosed that she once reached out to Lord Kenya, a close friend of Okumfour Kwadee, who had also faced similar struggles before turning his life around. She recounted how Lord Kenya shared his personal experiences with her and reassured her that her son could overcome his challenges.

Born Jerry Anaba, Okumfour Kwadee rose to fame in the early 2000s with hit songs such as “Abrantie” and “Mesan Aba.” His unique storytelling style and authentic Ghanaian sound earned him a loyal fan base.

However, in recent years, the hiplife musician has made headlines due to his mental health struggles and personal difficulties, raising concerns among fans and industry stakeholders.

Despite his challenges, many continue to hope for his full recovery and return to music.
